Microneedling is a skin treatment designed to improve your skin texture/tone, reduce wrinkles, decrease unwanted pigmentation from sun damage, and also reduce pore size. It can also be used to thicken damaged skin, for example, stretch marks or irregularities from acne scars. The essence of this treatment is to cause the deeper layers of your skin to make collagen and elastin. After the treatment, your skin cells will start to make collagen which will result in a smoother texture and long lasting results.

Microneedling is performed using an instrument with several super fine needles that barely enter the skin. The depth of penetration can be adjusted depending on the degree of repair that is necessary. The depth can vary from 0.5mm to 2.5mm. The superficial penetration of the needles “tricks” the body into making collagen that results in a significant improvement of the texture and quality of the skin.

The treatment is performed by our licensed aesthetician typically with topical anesthesia (an ointment applied about 10-15 minutes prior to the treatment). This effectively numbs the skin so the procedure has minimal discomfort. The skin is then cleansed and a serum is then applied to the skin. Next, the microneedling device is used to push the serum into the deeper layers of the skin. In some instances, platlet rich plasma (PRP) is used instead of a serum and this is also known as a “Vampire Facial”. Afterwards, the skin may be a little pink and there may be very tiny scabs that will fade a few days after the treatment. The treatment can also be done on the abdomen, legs, chest, buttocks or any other place there are stretch marks to thicken the skin and improve the appearance.

Most patients should have a series of treatments usually 3-6 months apart. Patients with severe acne scars or stretch marks on the body may wish to have it done once a month for several months. Patients should also consider having it done once a year to maintain the results and “freshen up” your skin. After the treatment, most patients feel their skin feels tighter and rejuvenated.
